D-ring snaffle D-ring snaffles are bits with rings in the shape of a "D". The D-ring ensures that the mouthpiece relative to the snaffle is stable and calm in the mouth of the horse. Because of the D-shaped bit rings, the rein pressure is distributed over a larger cheek surface area (per mm²) of the horse relative to the loose ring snaffle. In other words, relative to the loose ring snaffle the D-ring operates with more lateral pressure and will sometimes steer a little easier. A D-ring snaffle can in combination with the right mouthpiece be a comfortable bit to train along young horses. In particular, since the bit because of the shape of the rings will not easily be pulled through the mouth at the moment that the horse does not fully understand the trainers yet.
